Speaker: Rick Huizinga: Academic Teacher Development: From Theory to Practice at the University of Groningen.
Educational (teacher) development often varies from institution to institution (or even by department!) as a result of different teacher needs, university strategy, and classroom environment, just to name a few. Furthermore, a simple search for resources in this area can bring up wildly different policies, workshops, programmatic ideas, and even research; all with valid reasoning and justification. So, where to begin when improving educational quality through teacher development? This discussion/presentation will highlight the evolving approach at the University of Groningen. Though our approaches are certainly not perfect and full of errors along the way, the main goal of this session is to simply share experiences, thoughts, and lessons learned as we show how we answer the key questions of: What is ”good” teaching? How do teachers develop? And in practice, what university teacher development programmes evolved to follow the literature-based answers to these questions? Examples will be provided, mostly from the ”University Teaching Qualification” all Dutch universities provide.

Regardless of which stage of the educational career path you are on, it is always worth taking a critical look at your teaching practice. At its best, a teaching statement gives a clear and unique portrait of the author as a teacher – a kind of didactic selfie. Here and there, teaching statements are becoming an increasingly important part of hiring and tenure processes. And even if this formality is not officially required, they are also measures to help you clearly and coherently conceptualize your educational approach – your teaching philosophy. Find out what purposes a teaching statement serves and what it should contain. Take a didactic selfie!

In most universities course evaluations are common practice, mostly using questionnaires for students. However, there are many problems with these evaluations like lack of response and the results are often flawed. Based upon student data that universities already collect, learning analytics can sometimes provide better answers. But how to organize that in a university? I will present how we are trying, struggling and progressing and discuss what could be good (and probably also bad) solutions.

This presentation discusses the relationship between the educational philosophy and the operational side of the core curriculum systems in higher education. Building on more than twenty years of experience at Sabancı University (Istanbul, Turkey), the presentation will discuss how common courses are selected, designed and taught under the challenges of the ever-changing world of science, job market and academia with sustainable management of the human capital. The aim is to discuss how particular design choices create particular human capital management advantages or shortcomings and how our choices must take into consideration pre-existing norms and systems of educational ecosystems that we operate.

I will wrap up with a discussion on student response, benefits and challenges of this approach.

Teaching World History as a discussion of the human experience of the past and the present through a tool box of theoretical approaches. Skills students achieve during our 2-semester long course include analytical thinking, critical reading, historical thinking and academic writing in English. To this end, a selection of primary sources and secondary sources are used in student-centered exercises to discuss historical content and to facilitate the acquisition of above-mentioned skills. In order to achieve this, scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds cooperate with English language instructors.

The exhibition “Flow. Two Directions” takes place at a time not so distant from the exhibition that ended last academic year and is, in a sense, an extension of it. It will present the works of students of Painting and Graphics at the Faculty of Arts. Since the very beginning of these two faculties at the Academy of Fine Arts, it has been possible to observe a fairly free flow between these university representations of classical media. Students of graphic arts not infrequently turn out to be talented painters and those who have elected to major in painting begin to develop a fascination with graphic art techniques. The two fields of art influence each other, and so do the two study programmes at the Faculty of Arts. What the works of young male and female artists are about, whether recent events get into the poetics they use, and what trends can be noticed by having contact with them, you will see by visiting the exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice.

The project is inspired by the observation of gravitational waves on 14 September 2015 with the LIGO detector. The source of these waves was the merger of two black holes. The merger occurred 1.3±0.6 billion years ago.
On the one hand, it is inspiring that humans are able to identify such distant objects in time and space. On the other, this discovery happened very recently. I believe that despite the popular narrative of man’s scientific and technological might, there are still many things we don’t know. Perhaps more than what we know.
The space of aquariums somehow symbolises the horizon of human observation. The water, as a result of air waves, agitates, sometimes spilling out. Gravitational waves have given humans a ‘small splash of water’ beyond the observation horizon. By contrast, it is impossible to pour all the water out of the aquarium using air.

We look at what surrounds us, what we are stuck in up to our ears. We chew on the thick air, blow our tongues out like dogs after a chase, shield our bodies from the scorching sunlight, look into our wallets when turning on the gas or water, ask for shelters rather than seedlings.
As part of the creative project studio (Institute of Visual Arts, University of Silesia), we began to wonder if and how we could, using art, respond effectively to environmental change. The pandemic took away our pause in this thinking. It even tightened the screws and accelerated the deliberations. We made the decision to create a primer on the common good and surviving in the face of climate change. The war in Ukraine completely overturned the artistic expression of what we had planned, but left the idea untouched or perhaps strengthened.
The Elementary Reservoir based on a camouflage net, or common matrix, and hundreds of weaves made by different people is meant to give us a sense of connecting gazes, establishing relationships, mutual support, woven from individual gestures of strong protection.
The effect of joint creation from May 4 to October 11 remained at the weaving site. The Sun, heavy rain, wind, people, and animals worked on it regardless of our will. In Minus1.artspace it is to work further on the terms of the site.

The Exhibition Other/ Outsider/The Same is intended as an attempt at an aesthetic and critical reflection on the work of Hans Bellmer, which the curators of the project made from the perspective of gender studies. The reception of the artist’s work, evolving in the context of the transformations of art history itself, creates a space for reflection on the metamorphosis taking place in opposition to the oppression of heteronormative culture. In this context, the exhibition is also an opportunity to present the activities of contemporary female artists, like the author of the famous doll, who attempt to tame the monstrous dimension of the body and corporeality.
